Environmental Issues

In this lesson we will discuss 6 environmental issues we currently face due to human development, how we can monitor the impact we have on our environment and soloutions to how we can ressolve an issue.

Issue 5: Overfishing

This happens when the number of fish we catch (in order for us to consume) increases faster than the speed the fish can reproduce (and replace the fish we’ve taken).

Solutions

No fishing zones for specific periods so that fish have a time to breed and replenish the population before they are fished.

Fishing quotas (only allow fishing in certain areas) so that the population can be maintained in other areas but we can still catch fish.

Some people use fish farms, a place where many fish are kept in large tanks away from the sea. Doing this can eliminate competition between fish and other species they would have to compete against when in the sea, it eliminates predators, fish can be fed frequently and the quality of water can be controlled. This helps produce the best fish possible in large quantities. But this can have drawbacks such as an increased rate of disease in the fish populations, eutrophication due to all the waste produced and chemicals may be needed such as pesticides and antibiotics to control disease, and these can enter our food chain and be potentially harmful to our health.Another issue is, if the fish in the fish farm are carnivores, we still need to go out fishing for their food, and still may end up overfishing.
